Re: huge sale on Mountain House food
To me Mt House is kind of the fast food of storage food. Salty and of not so great nutritional value, but easy to prepare (add water) and light to carry.
Before I ordered any big cans I would taste that particular item in the pro pak single serving size. We actively like some of their menu items and cannot stand others. The pick it 1 can at a time option looks best to me (so you don't get a lot of menu items you don't like). I would ask them for production date before purchase. Ordinary staples like beans and grains are less expensive and healthier for you. But a few of these to satisfy the junk food craving or for when you don't want to, or can't cook are a good idea. |

Mostly just personal likes and dislikes, M Ho, though I don't know how anyone can eat those dried egg thingies.
But probably someone likes them or they would not keep making them. That is why everyone should sample for themselves. |

Re: huge sale on Mountain House food
Thanks for the tips. I really need to get on with laying in $10,000 worth of food. and Im talkin foods across the board. Fast food MH types, nuts, fruits, buckets of beans and wheat, full gamet of dried veges., ful gamet of fdried meat, the whole picture. I did order the pork chops and cheese and (butter) so far-- thanks Andy...
Its kinda like peace of mind have 60 % bullion and 40% pm stocks. Its not about whats the right food or wrong plan-- its a plan that you feel comfortable with. Inside knowing whats real. I think this food thing is a must do-- I went in stocks before the food cause pm bull will make me more money than food cost rises. Kinda like the AR story-- I can take down and clean an AR in my sleep--so HELL YA Im gonna own them.. Is it a right weapon for you?? I dont know - go find out-- but its not a bad choice- hell with it-- own a little of everything. Like Buffet (whom I dont respect) -- diversify if you dont know what your doin! http://www.safecastleroyal.com/product.sc?productId=17 http://www.nitro-pak.com/product_inf...oducts_id=1254 http://www.berkeywater.com/start.main.html |

In Laos, they sell rice in shopping bags by the side of the road, about 10ft away is the paddy field it grows in. |
Re: huge sale on Mountain House food
$10,000 in food ain't much, why not use that money to store and setup equipment for growing all the food you need covertly? Full spectrum grow lights, hydroponics setups, and hydroponic nutrient solution. As for power, theres been a few interesting threads on here about alternative energy storage, like compressed air and flywheels. Wind turbines, hydroelectric and solar panels might not work out where you are. Maybe if you have the space, you could grow oily veggies/plants, press them for oil, and convert to bio diesel, too. From what I've read, you don't need much, just lye and methanol, and the methanol isn't consumed in the process, either.
As a bonus, you could always find a way to sell your excess food for things you can't produce. I just think it would be tough spending your food stores late in the game on equipment to make your own food, as the people at that point in time with the ways-and-means wouldn't want competition. |

I cannot stand their blueberry cheesecake.. makes me want to vomit! My friend LOVED it however. Definitely try it before you buy a bunch. I like about 90% of MH products and I consider myself a somewhat picky eater... also stock LOTS of plain white rice to mix in with MH products some are very 'rich' and can stand a 1-1 mixture with white rice to tone down the high flavor or salt content. |
Re: huge sale on Mountain House food
Hate the breakfast but liked the other meals...
Did an Appalachian Trail hike for a few weeks and took Mountain House. The veggie sides are also quite good -- corn, green beans, and peas. Also took one of the ice cream sandwiches. All-in-all, not bad, jut don't have unreal expectations. It is freeze dried food, after all. What made it tolerable was an array of offerings. Low in calories -- combine with something like a hikers mix -- nuts and chocolate for a good combination. Also lacks protein -- beef jerky goes well with them. |
Re: huge sale on Mountain House food
Before you buy a bunch from that website, you might compare prices to:
http://beprepared.com/ The several I compared, Emergency Essentials had better prices than the marked "sale" price at the Ready Store. You might check the difference with shipping, though EE's regular shipping isn't that much anyway. I've ordered from EE before, it arrived quickly and correctly. I don't know about the Mountain House foods, I ordered some other dried stuff, fruits, veges, etc. |
